Lion's Mane 3000mg: What the Number on the Label Actually Means
Search for lion's mane in the UK and "3000mg" is everywhere. But two products that both say 3000mg can contain very different amounts of mushroom. Here's how to read the number, so you can compare labels properly.
Three ways brands state milligrams
1. Extract weight. The actual weight of extract in one serving. This is the most direct number. Health Lovers Lion's Mane contains 2,000mg (2g) of extract per serving.
2. "Equivalent" weight. The extract weight multiplied by the extract ratio. A serving of 250mg of a 12:1 extract can be labelled "3000mg equivalent", because 250 × 12 = 3,000. The number describes how much dried mushroom went in, not how much extract is in the capsule.
3. Powder weight. Some products are simply dried, ground mushroom, not extracted. 3,000mg of powder is 3g of mushroom, but it hasn't been concentrated.
The same number, three different products
|
Label says |
What's actually in a serving |
How the number is reached |
|---|---|---|
|
"3000mg" (12:1 extract) |
250mg of extract |
250mg × 12 |
|
"3000mg" (plain powder) |
3g of dried mushroom, not extracted |
Weight of powder |
|
Health Lovers "2000mg" (16:1 extract) |
2,000mg of extract |
Weight of extract; equivalent to about 32g of dried mushroom |
So the product with the smallest number on the front can contain the most mushroom.
How to compare any two lion's mane labels
- Find the extract per serving. Look on the back of the pack for the actual extract weight, not the headline figure.
- Check the ratio. A ratio tells you how concentrated the extract is.
- Check what it's made from. Fruiting body only, or mycelium grown on grain? Grain can end up in the powder.
- Check the beta-glucans. Ours are 35%+, which is about 700mg of beta-glucans in a 2g serving.
- Look for third-party testing. Ours is tested by Eurofins.
- Work out the price per gram of extract. Divide the price by the total grams of extract in the pack. A 60g jar of Health Lovers extract at £25.95 works out at about 43p per gram. A cheaper pack with 250mg of extract per serving often costs far more per gram.
How much lion's mane do people take?
Dosage summaries of human studies, such as Examine's, report daily amounts of roughly 1,000 to 3,000mg, often split through the day. Check what form a study used (powder or extract) before comparing it with a label, because they aren't the same thing. We cover dosage and safety in more detail in lion's mane side effects and dosage.
FAQs
Is a higher mg number always better? No. Compare the extract per serving, the ratio and the price per gram of extract, not the headline number.
Is 3000mg of powder stronger than 2000mg of extract? Not usually. Extraction concentrates the mushroom, so 2g of a 16:1 extract represents far more mushroom than 3g of plain powder.
Why don't you put "32,000mg" on the front? Because it describes the mushroom that went in, not what's in your serving. We'd rather tell you exactly what you're taking: 2g of extract.
Capsules or powder? Same extract either way: two capsules or one level teaspoon is 2g.
